The Pandur 8×8 EVO is a next-generation vehicle developed by TATRA DEFENCE VEHICLE (TDV) in cooperation with specialists from GDELS-Steyr. It features a modular design with a welded monocoque hull offering customizable ballistic and mine protection levels according to STANAG 4569. Compared to the previous Pandur 8×8 generation, it has a completely redesigned underbody. Due to its high ballistic and mine protection, the Pandur 8×8 EVO weighs up to 25 tons. The vehicle is equipped with an unmanned UT30MK2 turret from Israeli company Elbit Systems, which will also be produced by TATRA DEFENCE VEHICLE for the domestic market. Thus, the production of Pandur 8×8 EVO is fully localized in the Czech Republic.
It features advanced electronic, communication, and combat systems, a high-performance powertrain, and protection systems against chemical, biological, and nuclear threats. The engine and transmission system is located in the front right section, with the driver’s position next to it. The commander’s and gunner’s stations, along with the combat turret systems, are located in the center of the vehicle, while the rear section houses the mechanized squad. The Pandur 8×8 EVO is equipped with a newly designed filter-ventilation system, with filters replaceable from outside the vehicle, and relocated fuel tanks within the hull, enhancing protection for the crew and transported infantry. For improved comfort, the vehicle has efficient air conditioning and heating systems. It is also transportable by standard NATO transport aircraft, including the C-130, A400, C-5, C-390, etc.
The UT30MK2 turret has an optional ballistic protection level and houses ballistic computers, electromechanical weapon controls, ammunition feeders, and other systems. It allows crew access to the mounted weapons from inside. The turret does not extend into the vehicle’s hull, maximizing interior space and ergonomics for the crew and squad. Its main armament consists of a 30mm Mk.44 Bushmaster II cannon with an elevation range of −15 to +60 degrees and electrical stabilization. A 7.62mm coaxial machine gun is also mounted in the turret. Additionally, a separate launcher accommodates two Spike-LR/LR2 anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).
Both the commander and gunner have identical fully stabilized electro-optical sights with automatic target tracking and “hunter-killer” functionality, allowing the commander to designate targets for the gunner while scanning for new threats. The sights include a high-resolution daytime TV camera and a thermal imaging camera for night or adverse weather conditions. The commander’s sight also provides a panoramic view. The UT30MK2 turret can be fitted with the Iron Fist LC active protection system in a lightweight configuration, featuring two rotating twin launchers for defensive munitions. It also supports the Elaws (Elbit Laser Warning System), which detects laser irradiation, indicating both the direction and type of laser targeting the vehicle. Additionally, the turret has eight 76mm smoke grenade launchers mounted on its front.
The Pandur 8×8 EVO is powered by a high-performance powerpack, featuring a Cummins ISL 540 six-cylinder turbo diesel engine with a displacement of 8.9 liters, producing 405 kW (2200 rpm) and 1900 Nm torque (1400 rpm). It is paired with a ZF Ecomat 6-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle’s maximum speed is 105 km/h, with a range of at least 600 km.
